Flint Hills Discovery Center - Manhattan Kansas

Museum Exhibit
Scale: HO
Size: 5' x 20'
Controls: Custom Control System

CMR is building an exhibit for the Flint Hills Discovery Center located in Manhattan, Kansas. It will depict the area during the 1880's and feature a small prairie town, ranch scene and operating period ATSF (Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe) trains.

The photo above in the banner is from our exhibit. It has been manipulated to look like an old black and white photo, typical of photos that we worked from to create the scenes on the exhibit.

Finished exhibit photos are at the top of the page followed by chronological progress photos.

Photos are not edited or manipulated unless noted.

Exhibit Plan.

Note: The sky has been touched up, the rest of the photo is untouched.

The ranch has a small house, barns and a stockade for loading cattle onto the train.

Working in the garden.

This is the "big house" in town.

Milk is brought in by train and stored in a "cold house" while awaiting distribution.

The town is a busy place with shops that sell pretty much anything and everything that you need for rural life.

Note: The sky has been touched up, the rest of the photo is untouched.

The white building is the local hotel, it has a pool hall, a cigar room, a restaurant and probably a few other services as well.

An overview of the station and town.

The station is a typical period ATSF design, painted in standard colors.

The exhibit is assembled and the foam scenery is carved.

The ATSF depot and main street, circa 1880.

Looking east towards town. The buildings are ready to paint and detail.

The grain & feed supply.

The main station and town. The buildings are painted and we are working on signs, awnings and other building details.

Overview of the main diorama with a new sky backdrop. More work to be done on it but it is coming along. Grass and scenery to be worked on next.
